Our Story

Somewhere between our grandparents’ home gardens and industrial scale agriculture, things stopped looking and tasting the way they used to. Mockingbird Farmstead strives to refocus on the methods and practices that may have been lost to time and convenience, and leverage them against contemporary small scale farming techniques and university-supported best practices.

All our work is human-driven and small-scale. No winter hothouses forcing pale or grainy tomatoes out of season, and no conventional fertilizers, fungicides, insecticides or herbicides.

Our Farm

I love good food. I love food that’s genuine, and authentic. I grow the kinds of food that I like to eat, and I grow it in a way that just feels right to me. In my experiences cooking, growing, and eating food, I’ve found that great food can be simple, and simple food can be great. At no point does it need to be “fancy” - the quality of the ingredients and the care given to them are what elevates food to greatness. I grow heirloom varieties, rare or historically significant varieties, and produce that for too long has been overlooked or pigeon-holed into a single role. I work hard to not only provide you with this bounty, but also the tools, techniques, and recipes to ensure your success.

Our Kitchen

Food is how my Mom shows her love. She worked as a chef for many years and instilled in me a love of great food and adventurous eating. If you spend any time with her, she’ll feed you and you’re going to remember it. Not even the squirrels in her backyard are safe. Family gatherings are where my Mom truly shines, with thoughtful packaging, preparation, and serving. The things she brings with her to those gatherings were focused not only on the guest’s enjoyment, but ease of serving and convenience for the host or hostess. Many of her recipes are tried and true crowd pleasers that are decades old - proven track records of delicious treats that have stood the test of time - and are now cornerstones of our family’s traditions. Food brings us together, provides us comfort, nourishes, and entertains. It creates memories and forms traditions, and it connects us across time, culture, and geography. We are proud to bring you this pure love of food, complete with my mom’s catalogue of recipes, and a convenience and serving forward product. Chickadee kitchen is proud to offer those recipes and treats on the blog, and in our store.
